Pick up a Lindberg Air Titanium frame and the first thing you notice is what isn't there. No screws. No rivets. No welds. No solder. It's not a party trick — it's the whole philosophy.
Nearly every pair of glasses ever made is held together by tiny screws — and nearly every pair of glasses ever made eventually loosens at exactly those points. Screws back out. Threads strip. Hinges wobble. The weakest points of a conventional frame are the joints, and the joints are everywhere.
In the early 1980s, Henrik Lindberg — an architecture-trained designer working in his father's Aarhus optical shop — asked why frames had to be assembled this way at all. His answer became the Air Titanium series: a frame built from a single length of titanium wire, where the hinge is formed by the geometry of the wire itself, coiled around the temple. Nothing to loosen, because there's nothing joined.
The elimination of hardware does more than solve maintenance. It removes weight — an Air Titanium rim weighs under three grams, light enough that first-time wearers routinely check the mirror to confirm the glasses are still there. It also removes the visual noise of hinges and rivets, which is why Lindberg reads so clean across a room.
The design world noticed. Lindberg frames have won the iF Design Award and the Red Dot, and sit in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent design collection. More telling: forty years on, the company is still family-owned, still building every frame to order in Denmark.
